We share a vision for our state and our planet of healthy nature that is expanding rather than diminishing.
Who We Are
Friends of Kishwaukee Fen are passionate supporters of our natural history and heritage. The biodiversity of Kishwaukee Fen depends in large part on our stewardship.
We are part of Friends of Illinois Nature Preserves and believe that empowered, optimistic, can-do volunteer groups can restore health, quality, and sustainability to threatened natural areas. That is exactly what we are doing at Kish Fen!
We volunteers are at different levels of expertise and understanding. We have different backgrounds and aptitudes. We learn all the time – as individuals and as a community.
“Nature is more complicated than you think … and more complicated than you can think.” - Frank Egler
Ecosystem restoration is a new science that requires many minds, all working together. Thus we strive to learn all the time by listening, doing, leading, observing, following up on our actions, and making plans to turn that cycle over and over.
At Kish Fen eco-restoration days, we discuss and act on the greatest ecological priority based on the season. Brush cutting, invasive species management, seed collecting, prescribed burning, and rare plant monitoring are just some of the crucial stewardship tasks that we volunteers do.
What’s in it for you?
Do you care about, and want to participate in the conservation of native plants and animals?
Might you want to learn about and take an active role in preserving one of Illinois’ rarest ecosystems?
Would you enjoy the tranquility of nature and the fellowship of others of like mind?
If you can answer “yes” to any of the above, then you too would benefit from even casual participation in Friends of Kish Fen activities.
